Glycolic Acid
Helps to exfoliate the outer dead cell layer (stratum corneum) of the epidermis; loosens plugs that block pores, lightens brown discolorations, leading to a smoothing of the skin surface and improved tone and texture. It also enhances the hydration status of the skin, by binding water molecules more effectively than regular moisturizers. It also has been shown to have an effect on the dermis, by stimulating the production of new collagen and elastic tissue fibers. Glycolic acid comes in cleansers, lotions, creams of different potencies, and in-office peel preparations. Selection of specific products is based on skin type and what condition one is trying to target.
